When You’ve Put too Much Effort into “Hating”

I don’t think I’m saying anything new when I state that life is hard.  There are bills to pay and kids to feed.  Or there are tests to study for and job applications to fill out.  There is a lot that goes into accomplishing those things and you still need to find time to do what makes you happy in between.  This is why it always hurts just a little bit to see people online or in person “hate” on things or people.

Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely things to hate such as inequality, prejudice, and anyone who propagates those things.   But taking the precious time to “hate” on a celebrity or a piece of entertainment seems like a waste of that previously agreed upon precious time.

Last night was the Oscars and while I enjoy watching them, I completely understand why people would think they are dumb and a waste of that precious time we’ve been talking about.    The broadcast is usually overlong, it focuses on a bunch of well to do people congratulating themselves and any political or socially productive talk is usually frowned upon.  But you know what?  The Oscars doesn’t hide that at all.  Which means that you know what you’re getting when it comes to the Oscars.  However, to see the amount of comedians on my twitter feed and people who I assume want to be comedians on my twitter feed who were doing play by play “hating” on the Oscars such as calling out what they thought were bad jokes or making fun of the celebrities on stage for not bringing up more pertinent issues like the un-employment rate or the education system seemed a bit high.

The Oscars are just an example of an event that people vent about ad nauseam not just before or after but during even though they don’t need to engage at all and are being just as unproductive as the event or celebrity they are “hating” on at the moment.

Once again, I don’t think I’m saying anything new when I recommend that instead of going on a Facebook/Twitter tirade, you turn off whatever it is that is bothering you and do something that makes you happy.  In fact if you have the time to be doing the Facebook/Twitter updates you probably have time to start work on being the change you’d like to see in the world.

That is way better than adding another voice to the things you see wrong in the world.
